How to Clean a Mechanical Keyboard: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Mechanical keyboards are a significant investment for gamers, writers, and programmers. However, because of their open housing design, they easily attract dust, hair, food crumbs, and finger oils. Regular cleaning not only keeps your keyboard looking pristine but also prevents hardware failure like key sticking, chatter, and double-registering. This guide walks you through the step-by-step process of cleaning your mechanical keyboard safely and effectively.

Why Cleaning Your Mechanical Keyboard is Essential

Unlike standard membrane keyboards, mechanical keyboards rely on individual physical switches under each key. Debris falling inside these switches can easily disrupt the metal leaf contact points, causing the keys to stop working or register double-taps. Regularly clearing out dust ensures zero-latency performance and extends the switch life up to 50 million keystrokes.

Tools You Will Need

Before you begin, gather the following cleaning supplies:

  • A wire keycap puller (wire pullers are preferred over plastic ones as they do not scratch keycaps).
  • A container of warm water and mild dish soap.
  • Microfiber cloth and cotton swabs (Q-tips).
  • Can of compressed air.
  • Isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher).

Step 1: Take a Reference Photo

Before removing any keycaps, take a clear photo of your keyboard layout on your phone. This will save you time and frustration when placing the keycaps back onto the switches in the correct order, especially for special function keys and layout variations.

Step 2: Pull the Keycaps & Wash Them

Dust and finger grease build up heavily on keycap surfaces. Here is how to wash them safely:

  1. Unplug your keyboard.
  2. Gently pull off the keycaps using your wire keycap puller. Avoid pulling at an angle to prevent breaking the switch stems.
  3. Fill a bowl with warm water and mix in a few drops of dish soap.
  4. Submerge the keycaps in the water and let them soak for 30 minutes.
  5. After soaking, rub away any stubborn dirt, rinse with clean water, and lay them stem-down on a towel to dry completely.

Step 3: Clean the Keyboard Frame & Plate

With the keycaps removed, you will see the metal switch plate. It will likely be covered in dust and hair.

  1. Turn the keyboard upside down and gently shake or tap it to dislodge loose debris.
  2. Use a can of compressed air to blow away the remaining dust between the switches.
  3. Dampen your microfiber cloth with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol and wipe down the plate surface. Use cotton swabs dipped in alcohol to scrub the tight spaces between switches.

Step 4: Reassemble the Keyboard

Ensure that both the keyboard plate and the keycaps are **100% dry** before reassembly. Any residual moisture can seep into the switches and short-circuit the PCB board. Use your reference photo to push each keycap firmly back onto its switch stem.
