How to Fix Keyboard Double Clicking (Mechanical & Membrane)

Is your keyboard double-clicking, registering multiple keystrokes, or suffering from what gamers call "keyboard chatter"? There is nothing more frustrating than typing a word and seeing "thhhe" instead of "the". Fortunately, in 90% of cases, keyboard double-clicking is caused by either dust accumulation, incorrect software repeat settings, or contact oxide build-up. This guide provides step-by-step diagnostic procedures to fix your double-clicking keyboard quickly.

What Causes Keyboard Double-Clicking (Chatter)?

Keyboard chatter occurs when the physical contact points inside a switch bounce or vibrate excessively, sending multiple signals to the computer instead of a single keystroke. Common causes include:

  • Debris and Dust: Tiny dust particles block the electrical contact points.
  • Oxidation: Humid environments cause oxide layers on copper contacts inside switches.
  • Switch Wear: Over time, mechanical springs lose tension and begin bouncing.
  • OS Configuration: Windows or Mac keyboard repeat delay settings configured too fast.

Step 1: Check Windows Keyboard Repeat Settings

Before pulling keycaps, rule out software settings. Sometimes, Windows key repeat properties trigger double letters because the repeat delay is too short.

  1. Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type control keyboard and press Enter.
  3. In the Keyboard Properties window, locate the Repeat delay slider.
  4. Move the slider one notch closer to Long.
  5. Click Apply and test typing.

Tip: Adjusting repeat settings is especially helpful for membrane keyboards, laptop keyboards, and older mechanical switches that are starting to show signs of mechanical fatigue.

Step 2: Clean the Switch with Compressed Air

Dust is the number one enemy of mechanical keyboard switches. If a single key (e.g., Spacebar or E) is double-clicking, try blowing out the debris:

  1. Unplug your keyboard.
  2. Remove the keycap of the double-clicking key using a keycap puller.
  3. Press down the switch stem (the colored cross-shaped plunger) completely.
  4. Use a can of compressed air to blow directly into the gap between the stem and the switch housing.
  5. Release and press the switch stem rapidly 20 times to clear out any dislodged dust particles.

Step 3: Fix Mechanical Switch Oxidation (Isopropyl Alcohol Method)

If compressed air fails, there may be microscopic oxidation on the internal copper contacts. High-purity isopropyl alcohol (IPA 90% or higher) is non-conductive and will clean the contact points inside the switch housing without damaging the electronics:

  1. Disconnect the keyboard from the PC.
  2. Remove the keycap of the faulty key.
  3. Apply 2 to 3 drops of 90%+ isopropyl alcohol directly onto the switch stem using a dropper or a small cotton swab.
  4. Rrepeatedly press the switch stem down for 30-40 seconds to allow the alcohol to seep inside and dissolve dirt or oxidation on the metal leaf.
  5. Wait 10-15 minutes for the alcohol to completely evaporate.
  6. Plug the keyboard back in and test.
