Optical vs Mechanical Keyboard Switches

When selecting a mechanical keyboard, the choices extend beyond switch colors (Red, Blue, Brown). Modern keyboards offer two fundamentally different actuation methods: **traditional mechanical switches** and **optical switches**.

Both systems provide mechanical tactile feedback, but they register keystrokes using entirely different physics. Let's compare their durability, speed, latency, and customization profiles.

1. Actuation Method

Traditional Mechanical Switches: Actuation occurs when the plastic stem moves down and forces two physical copper leaves to touch, closing an electrical circuit. This physical metal contact registers the input.

Optical Switches: Actuation happens using light. A small infrared light beam runs constantly across the switch socket on the PCB. When the key is pressed, the stem blocks or permits the light beam to hit a sensor, immediately registering the input without physical contact.

2. Input Latency & Debounce Delay

Traditional mechanical metal contacts bounce slightly when they touch, creating electrical noise. To prevent registering a single keystroke multiple times, the firmware enforces a **debounce delay** (usually 5ms to 15ms).

Because optical switches actuate using light, there is no physical metal contact and zero contact bounce. This removes the need for a debounce delay, allowing optical switches to achieve sub-millisecond response times.

3. Durability and Lifespan

Mechanical switches suffer from metal oxidation, fatigue, and wear over time. Standard mechanical switches (like Cherry MX) are rated for 50 to 100 million keystrokes.

Optical switches eliminate physical contacts, leaving only the plastic stem and spring to experience wear. As a result, optical switches are rated for 100 million+ keystrokes and are highly resistant to liquid spills and dust accumulation.

4. Modding and Customization

If you enjoy swap-modding your keyboard switches (hot-swap), traditional mechanical switches offer thousands of options from brands like Gateron, Kailh, and Durock. Optical switches, however, require specialized PCBs and are only compatible with a limited selection of optical-specific switches.
